I designed this visual arts curriculum with my daughter in mind. She needed some stress relief and enjoys creating things and drawing, so I thought this would be a great fit for a high school class idea.
All of these assignments can be completed for free or nearly free. Nearpod offered some nice interactive videos, so I signed up for the free tier, but they only allow a limited number of free assignments. The art assignments were my favorite ones on that site, so I utilized almost all of the free tier with this topic.
Many of these art assignments can be completed with a minimum of supplies, such as paper, pencils, colored pencils, markers, crayons, and glue. Some projects require additional supplies that you might not have around the house, so it is a good idea to review assignments ahead of time to determine any additional supplies that need to be purchased before the week has begun. A few art ideas have links to .pdf documents that are geared toward teaching large classes with rather expensive supply lists. We tended to tweak some of those ideas so that we could use less expensive supplies; however, I thought those documents were well done and spelled out specific goals that teachers in public or private schools might find helpful.
Flexibility can be helpful. Some weeks have harder assignments than others, so if my daughter began working on a particularly difficult piece, some pieces would count for two weeks on her visual arts assignments. We often visited the library for teen programs throughout the year. When she did a craft with a library program, I also allowed those to count for visual arts assignments unless she particularly wanted to do the assigned one in addition to the library art activity. When she chose to do art for some of her ELA assignments, I also gave credit for those as art assignments instead of some of the art projects for this separate class. I did not create this set of assignments to become more stress but instead to be stress-relieving, fun, educational, and engaging!
One of my daughter's requests was to have options, so I provided choices each week. She found that she really liked step-by-step videos for drawing various pieces, so I included links to those videos with these assignments. If you choose to utilize these visual arts assignments, you are welcome to present these assignments as is; however, if your student(s) or child(ren) have particular interests, you might search together for art videos and ideas that spark their individual interests if these do not work for you. YouTube offers a nice variety of free step-by-step art videos. You might also explore pottery, textile arts, woodworking, digital art, etc. if those options are more engaging for your student(s) or child(ren).
The art portfolio and artist research project provided a great way to organize my daughter's thoughts and art projects. At the end of the year, she made copies of her original Google documents and then only focused on a few favorite pages to present to her audience, providing her with valuable public speaking practice. You are welcome to assign shorter presentations throughout the school year, such as monthly, quarterly, per semester, etc. if you wish to do something similar to but shorter than what I did.
Since my daughter was also taking a world history class that I designed, I created some of these art assignments to align with what she was learning in history class. I included links to each weekly individual world history assignments at the bottom of each weekly visual arts assignment in case you would like to review that information individually as well.
