34.2c Position on Side

Supplies: 3 pillows (+1 that is already on the bed)

Must successfully demonstrate 10/12 steps

Explain procedure, speaking clearly, slowly, and directly, maintaining a face-to-face interaction

Provide 360° privacy with a curtain, screen, or door.

Before turning, lower head of bed

Raise side rail on side to which body will be turned

Assist client to slowly roll onto side toward raised side rail

Place or adjust pillow under head for support

Reposition arm and shoulder so client is not lying on his/her/their arm

Support top arm with pillow

Place pillow behind client’s back

Place pillow between legs with top knee flexed while knee and ankle are supported

Ensure signaling device is within reach and the bed is in the lowest horizontal position

After completing the skill, wash hands

Suggested Time: 4 minutes
