3.1c Perineal (Peri) Care for a Female

Supplies: 6 washcloths bath blanket linen protector bath basin soap soiled linen container

Must successfully complete 16/20 steps

Explain procedure, speaking clearly, slowly, and directly, maintaining a face-to-face interaction

Provide 360° privacy with a curtain, screen, or door.

Before washing, check water temperature (self and client) for safety and comfort

Don clean gloves before washing perineal area

Before washing, place linen protector under perineal area including buttocks

Expose only perineal area (hips to knees)

Apply soap to wet washcloth

Required Step: Wash genital area from front to back while using a clean area of the washcloth for each stroke

Required Step: Using a clean washcloth, rinse soap from genital area, moving from front to back, while using a clean area of the washcloth for each stroke

Dries genital area from front to back with dry cloth washcloth

After drying genital area, turn client to side, then wash rectal area, moving from front to back using a clean area of the washcloth for each stroke

Using a clean washcloth, rinse soap from rectal area moving from front to back using a clean area of the washcloth for each stroke

Dry rectal area from front to back with a dry washcloth

Reposition the client

Empty, rinse and dry the basin

Place the basin in the dirty supply area

Dispose of soiled linen in soiled linen container and dispose of linen protector appropriately

Avoid contact between candidate clothing and used linens

Properly remove and dispose of gloves and immediately wash hands

Place signaling device within reach and ensure the bed is in the lowest horizontal position
