25.2c Catheter Care for a Female

Supplies: 3 washcloths bath blanket linen protector bath basin soap soiled linen container

Must successfully demonstrate 13/16 step

Explain procedure, speaking clearly, slowly, and directly, maintaining a face-to-face interaction

Provide 360° privacy with a curtain, screen, or door.

Before washing, check water temperature (self and client) for safety and comfort

Don clean gloves before washing

Before washing, place linen protector under perineal area including buttocks

Expose area surrounding catheter (hips to knees) while avoiding overexposure of client

Apply soap to wet washcloth

Required Step: While holding catheter at meatus without tugging, clean at least 4 inches of catheter from the meatus, moving only in one direction, away from the meatus, using a clean area of the washcloth for each stroke

Required Step: While holding catheter at meatus without tugging, rinse at least 4 inches of catheter from the meatus, moving only in one direction, away from the meatus, using a clean area of the washcloth for each stroke

While holding catheter at meatus without tugging, dry at least 4 inches of catheter from the meatus, moving only in one direction, away from the meatus, using a clean area of the washcloth for each stroke

Empty, rinse, and dry the basin

Place the basin in the designated dirty supply area

Dispose of used linen into soiled linen container and dispose of linen protector appropriately

Avoid contact between candidate clothing and used linen

Properly remove and dispose of gloves and immediately wash hands

Ensure signaling device is within reach and the bed is in the lowest horizontal position

Suggested Time: 6 minutes
