24.3c Assist with Use of Bedpan

Supplies: bedpan handwipes toilet tissue

Must successfully demonstrate 14/17 steps

Explain procedure, speaking clearly, slowly, and directly, maintaining a face-to-face interaction

Provide 360° privacy with a curtain, screen, or door.

Lower head of bed before placing bedpan

Don clean gloves before placing bedpan under client

Place bedpan correctly under client’s buttocks

Properly remove and dispose of gloves and immediately wash hands

After positioning client on bedpan and removing gloves, raise head of the bed

Place toilet tissue within reach

Place hand wipes within reach and instruct client to clean hands with hand wipe when finished

Place signaling device within reach and instruct client to signal when finished Step outside of the curtain

After being signaled, don clean gloves before removing bedpan

Lower head of the bed before removing bedpan

Ensure client is covered except when placing and removing the bedpan

“Empty” the bedpan into the toilet, then rinse the bedpan and pour the rinse into the toilet

Place bedpan in the designated dirty supply area

Properly remove and dispose of gloves and immediately wash hands

Ensure signaling device is within reach and the bed is in the lowest horizontal position

Suggested Time: 5 minutes
