18.1c Measure/Record Manual Blood Pressure

Supplies: appropriately sized blood pressure cuff stethoscope alcohol wipe recording device

Must successfully demonstrate 10/12 steps

Explain procedure, speaking clearly, slowly, and directly, maintaining a face-to-face interaction

Before using stethoscope, wipe bell/diaphragm and then earpieces of stethoscope with alcohol

Position client’s arm with palm up on overbed table with upper arm exposed

Feel for brachial artery on inner aspect of arm at bend of elbow

Place blood pressure cuff snugly on client’s upper arm, with sensor/arrow over brachial artery site

Place stethoscope earpieces in ears angled toward your nose and place diaphragm over the brachial artery site, ensuring the diaphragm is engaged

Inflate cuff 160-180 mmHg If a beat is heard immediately upon cuff deflation, completely deflate cuff and inflate cuff to no more than 200 mmHg

Deflate cuff slowly and smoothly and note the first sound (systolic reading) and last sound (diastolic reading) If rounding is needed, round up to the nearest 2mm Hg

Remove cuff

Place signaling device within reach

Wash hands before recording

Required Step: Record both systolic and diastolic numbers within 8 mmHg of evaluator’s reading

Suggested Time: 4 minutes
