Nurse Aide 1 Module AA Vocabulary Flash Cards: Fluid Balance

Module AA: Fluid Balance

Catheter Bag

Collection device for urine that is connected to a urinary catheter which drains the bladder

Commode Hat Urine Hat Specimen Pan

Plastic collection container placed under a commode lid used when the resident has BRP (bathroom privileges) and is on I&O and/or has a urine or stool specimen ordered

Cubic Centimeter

Metric uint of measure used to count the colume of liquies 1cc = 1mL

Dehydration

Output > Intake

Diarrhea

Frequent passage of loose, watery stools (bowel movements/BMs)

Edema

Intake > Output

Emesis Basin

Plastic, shallow basin shaped like a kidney that fits against the resident’s neck & collects body fluids when a resident is nauseated & during mouthcare

Encourage Fluids Force Fluids

Doctor’s order that increases the resident’s fluid intake

Fluid Balance

Intake = Output (approximately, usually with 500mL)

Fluid Intake

Comparison of the amount of food eaten by a resident at mealtime with the amount of food provided, typically recorded as a percentage

Gastric Suction Material

Stomach contents that are suctioned out using a NGT (nasogastric tube)

Graduate Graduated Cylinder

Accurate measuring device for fluids used in a health care setting

Hydration

Having the right amount of fluid in the body

Intake/Input

The amount of fluid taken in by the body through eating, drinking, IV fluids, tube feedings, etc.

Intake and Output (I&O)

Used to evaluate fluid balance whereby intake & output are measured, documented, and compared

Milliliter (mL)

Metric unit of measure used to count fluids 1mL = 1cc 30mL = 1oz

Nothing by Mouth (NPO)

Doctor’s order that states that a resident is not to eat or drink anything

Output

Amount of fluid lost from the body (urine, liquid stool, vomit, etc.)

Restrict Fluids

Doctor’s order limiting  a resident’s fluid intake

Special Fluid Orders

Doctor’s orders stating how much fluid a resident must drink/day in order to maintain fluid balance

Thickened Liquids

Doctor’s order stating that all fluids taken in by mouth are to be thickened

Urinal

Plastic, elongated device used by men to urinate into, particularly when confined to bed or on I&O

Vomiting

Ejection of food/fluids from the stomach via the esophagus & mouth

Vomitus

Food/fluids ejected from the stomach via the esophagus & mouth

Height Rod

Device used on a standing scale that measures a resident’s height/tallness

Kilogram (kg)

Metric unit of measurement used to determine weight 1kg = 2.2lb

Pound (lb)

Unit of measurement used to determine weight 1lb = 0.45kg
