Nurse Aide 1 Module AA Vocabulary Flash Cards: Blood Pressure

Module AA:  Blood Pressure

Aneroid Manometer

Part of the BP cuff that includes the dial that indicates the systolic and diastolic pressures during BP checks

Blood Pressure

Amount of force exerted by the blood against the walls of the artery

Diaphragm

Part of the stethoscope located on the chest-piece used to listen to the presence/absence of brachial artery blood flow during BP checks,  larger of the two sides

Diastole/Diastolic

Resting phase of the heart when the heart fills with blood;  the bottom number of a BP reading

Hypertension

High BP;  BP with a reading above normal

Hypotension

Low BP;  BP with a reading below normal

Millimeters of Mercury (mmHg)

Unit of measurement for BP

Orthostatic Hypotension

Abnormal low BP occurring when standing up, person often has weakness/dizziness/faintness and may see spots, often due to dehydration

Sphygmomanometer

BP cuff, equipment used to check a person’s blood pressure

Stethoscope

Instrument used for listening to heart sounds, lung sounds, apical pulse, brachial pulse during BP checks, etc.

Systole/Systolic

Working phase of the heart when the heart is pumping blood to the body; top number of a BP reading
