Module AA: Respirations

Apnea

No breathing

Bradypnea

Respiratory rate that is lower than normal limits (<12 breaths/minute in adults)

Cheyne-Stokes

Alternating periods of slow, irregular breathing & rapid, shallow breathing, plus short periods of absent breathing

Dyspnea

Painful, difficult breathing

Eupnea

Normal breathing, breathing WNL

Exhale

When carbon dioxide is expelled out of the nose/mouth from the lungs

Expiration

Breathing out of carbon dioxide through the nose/mouth while the chest falls (exhalation)

Inhale

When air is pulled in through the nose & down into the lungs

Inspiration

Breathing in with a chest rise (inhalation)

Lungs

Elastic, spongy, cone-shaped air-filled structures involved & the location where the exchange of oxygen & carbon dioxide occur

Respiration

Supplies oxygen to cells & removes carbon dioxide from cells

Respirations/ Respiratory Rate

Number of inspirations/inlagations a person takes in a minute

Respiratory System

Involves the structures involved with breathing in of oxygen and breathing out of carbon dioxide

Tachypnea

Respiratory rate above normal limits (>20 in adults)
