This graphing exercise creates a fun spider!
I made the example using graph paper, pencil, and black and red crayons.
If you are assigning this as a class activity, you may wish to only provide the directions and let the students discover that it will create a spider.
Supplies
- Graph paper (or make your own)
- Pencil
- Black crayon, colored pencil, or marker
- Red crayon, colored pencil, or marker
Directions
- With a pencil, mark the following coordinates of a square: (2,0) (3,0) (2,-1) (3,-1)
- Color the resulting square red with a red crayon, colored pencil, or marker.
- With a pencil, mark the following coordinates of a square: (-1,0) (-2,0) (-1,-1) (-1,-2)
- Color the resulting square red with a red crayon, colored pencil, or marker.
With a pencil, draw a line connecting each of the three points listed for each line, starting with the first point and drawing the line to the second point and then to the third point. Each of the lines is separate - do NOT connect all eight lines together.
- Line #1 (-4,2) to (-5,4) to (-7,3)
- Line #2 (-4,1) to (-6,3) to (-8,0)
- Line #3 (-4,-1) to (-6,-1) to (-8,-3)
- Line #4 (-3,-2) to (-4,-3) to (-3,-5)
- Line #5 (4,-2) to (5,-3) to (5,-4)
- Line #6 (5,-1) to (7,-1) to (9,-3)
- Line #7 (5,1) to (7,2) to (9,0)
- Line #8 (5,2) to (7,4) to (9,3)
After drawing the above eight lines in pencil, make each of the eight lines darker with a black crayon, colored pencil, or marker.
With a pencil, mark each of the following coordinates (some may already be marked):
(0,4) (2,4) (4,3) (5,2) (5,1) (5,-1) (4,-2) (2,-3) (-2,-3) (-3,-2) (-4,-1) (-4,1) (-4,2) (-3,3) (-2,4) (0,4)
Connect all 15 of the coordinates with a black crayon, colored pencil, or marker.
Except for the red squares, color the shape you just created with a black crayon, colored pencil, or marker.
Using a black crayon, colored pencil, or marker, draw a dark black line from (0,4) to (0,15).
Enjoy your Halloween spider!
