We can learn a lot about our world through art. Learning about the people who create(d) masterpieces of artwork can be a great way to learn even more!

Artist Research Project

Each week you will have the opportunity to learn about various artists.

Create a blank slideshow entitled Artist Research Project. Add however many pages you need to include the weekly information below.

Each week, choose a total of two artists, one from the past and one presently living today, and include the following information:

  • The artist's name
  • A picture of the artist
  • The artist's birth date and death date (if applicable)
  • The style(s) of artwork that he/she/they created
  • Something you found interesting about this artist
  • The artist's most famous pieces or where the art has been displayed
  • Your personal favorite pieces made by the artist
  • Comment on the artist's use of color, form, value, space, shape, line, texture, etc. that you particularly noticed
  • Anything else that you would like to share while learning about this artist and his/her/their work
As you look for artists to research, consider a wide variety of searches, including various art mediums, decades, styles, and more.

Be prepared to present your artist research project at the end of the quarter, semester, or school year.

How to Customize This Assignment

This artist research project can be adjusted in various ways as needed. For example, you can alternate artists while choosing one current artist one week and one former artist the following week and then keep alternating. You might also choose to research two artists a month or to select one artist from the weekly art assignments to highlight each week. The presentation at the end could include the entire project or you may wish to make a copy of the original and only highlight a few artists that are the most interesting or that represent particular types of art.

You might opt for a more ELA-focused art assignment such as:

  • Write a 5-paragraph essay about your favorite artist.
  • Write a 2-page paper comparing and contrasting two artists.
  • Write an essay about a specific art movement in history while highlighting at least three different artists.
  • Write a letter to your favorite current artist.
