Here are the eight novels my daughter read for 9th grade ELA (English Language Arts). She enjoys reading, so I wanted to give her plenty of opportunities to enjoy books throughout the school year. I explored several web sites, checked with an ELA teacher, and enlisted suggestions from my older daughters and early college students in my classes before creating this list. I also encouraged my daughter who was homeschooling to give input and let her pick two of the novels from a list of options.

My daughter read one book each month and completed a digital scrapbook assignment related to each of these books. Some books were easier and quicker to read while others were a little longer and more difficult, so there were times when we tweaked due dates. We borrowed some of these books from our local public library and purchased some of them from McKay's for a low budget approach to this class.

We also watched the movie of each one utilizing sites like Amazon, Hulu, Netflix, and our local public library. You may find digital Cliffs Notes to be helpful when researching books. Several of these assignments aligned nicely with my world history and visual arts curricula.

3. Macbeth (We used a No Fear Shakespeare version.) by William Shakespeare
4. The Hired Girl by Laura Amy Schlitz (student choice)
5. Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank
6. The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie
7. The Giver by Lois Lowry
8. The Bean Trees by Barbara Kingsolver (student choice)
