Algebra Practice: Problems with Two Known Variables

This practice test includes ten algebraic expressions in which there are two known variables. Simply enter numbers for the two variables and solve. I created this post in adaptive mode so that readers will see the correct answer immediately after clicking on each slide. Feel free to write down your answers and compare your answers and steps with mine. You might approach some of these problems in a different manner and still get the correct answer, which is fine.

Directions

  1. Click on the first slide below to enlarge to full screen.
  2. Click on each slide or on the thumbnail at the bottom of the screen to advance to the next slide.

Thanks so much for visiting my Student Survive 2 Thrive blog. Find additional resources by clicking on any of the posts below or via my site map, search bar, or topics tabs.

What is 5x + 2y when x=3 and y=4 ? Possible choices: 23, 7, 48, 14

What is 5x + 2y when x=3 and y=4 ? 5(3)+2(4)=15+8=23

What is ⅓ x - ¼ y when x=30 and y=20? Possible answers: 15, -1/720, 5, -5

What is 1/3x - 1/4y when x=30 and y=20? ⅓(30)-¼(20) = 30/3-20/4 = 10-5 = 5

What is 2x-7-3y when x=7 and y=1? Possible answers: -3, 24, 3, 4

What is 2x-7-3y when x=7 and y=1? 2(7)-7-3(1) = 14-7-3 = 4

What is ¾ x + 2 - 6y when x=4 and y=2? Possible answers: -9, -7, 7, 17

What is ¾ x + 2 - 6y when x=4 and y=2? ¾(4)+2-6(2)=12/4+2-12=3+2-12=-7

What is 100-12(x-1)+10y when x=5 and y=2? Possible answers: 72, 132, 48, 27

What is 100-12(x-1)+10y when x=5 and y=2? 100-12(5-1)+10(2)=100-12(4)+20=100-48+20=72

What is 3(2x+y) when x=3 and y=5 ? Possible answers: 3, -6, 48, 33

What is 3(2x+y) when x=3 and y=5 ? 3[2(3)+5]=3(6+5)=3(11)=33

What is 20x+40y-160 when x=4 and y=2 ? Possible answers: -160, 0, 320, -178

What is 20x+40y-160 when x=4 and y=2 ? 20(4)+40(2)-160=80+80-160=0

What is 7.3x+1.5y when x=3 and y=4 ? Possible answers: 225, 22.5, 27.9, 83

What is 7.3x+1.5y when x=3 and y=4 ? 7.3(3)+1.5(4)=21.9+6=27.9

What is 12x-5y when x=5 and y=-5 ? Possible answers: 85, 17, -35, 35

What is 12x-5y when x=5 and y=-5 ? 12(5)-5(-5)=60-(-25)=60+25=85

What is 15+1½ x-4.5y when x=6 and y=10 ? Possible answers: 21, 3, 19.5, -21

What is 15+1½ x-4.5y when x=6 and y=10 ? 15+3/2(6)-4.5(10)=15+9-45=-21

Scientific Notation and Standard Form for Decimals and Fractions

Writing long numbers can be much shorter when using scientific notation. This Kahn Academy video on scientific notation explains how to covert numbers in standard form to scientific notation. I've created some practice questions, including some decimals and fractions for an extra challenge. This practice test is in adaptive mode, which means you can see the correct answers after answering each question.

Directions

  1. Click on the first graphic to enlarge to full screen.
  2. Write your answers on a sheet of paper.
  3. Click on either the graphic or the next thumbnail to advance to the next screen.

Write the following in scientific notation: 0.00003

0.00003 equals 3 times 10 to the -5 power

Write the following in scientific notation: 0.001234

0.001234 is 1.234 times 10 to the -3 power

Write the following in scientific notation: 0.00000509

0.00000509 is 5.09 times 10 to the -6 power

Write the following in scientific notation: 0.00000010107

0.00000010107 is 1.0107 times 10 to the -7 power

Write the following in scientific notation: 3/4

3/4 = 75% = 0.75 = 7.5 times 10 to the -1 power

Write the following in standard format: 2 times 10 to the -2 power

2 times 10 to the -2 power is 0.02

Write the following in standard format: 773 times 10 to the -8 power

773 times 10 to the -8 power is 0.0000000773

Write the following in standard format: 5.008 times 10 to the -3 power

5.008 times 10 to the -3 power is 0.005008

Write the following in standard format: 1.003 times 10 to the -6 power

1.003 times 10 to the -6 power is 0.000001003

Write the following in fraction format: 5 times 10 to the -1 power
