Free Medical Terminology Flash Cards: Color Prefixes and Combining Forms

Medical terminology often involves describing parts of the body and other items through the use of color. Several color-related prefixes and combining forms are used in healthcare professions. For example, something that is melanocytic is black while an area that is cyanotic would have a blue hue.

Many of these colorful prefixes and combining terms are a bit difficult to remember until you begin associating them with medical terms with which you may already be familiar. For example, someone who has jaundiced skin would have a yellowish tint, while a leukocyte is a white blood cell.

After mastering these prefixes and combining terms that denote color, this knowledge may help you to decipher terms with with you may not be readily familiar.

Free Medical Terminology Practice Test: Plural Forms of Words

Learning medical terminology has its challenges, and for many people, learning how to make a singular word into a plural form can be quite challenging. Although many words follow the standard rule of simply adding an -s or -es, other words have plural forms that follow rather different rules; however, some of the more common exceptions are found below.

This chart gives examples of some rules for making plural forms of words in medical terminology:

Singular form ends in:	Plural form rule:
-a	Change the -a to -ae
-ax	Change the -ax to -aces
-is	Change the -is to -es
-ix, -ex, or -yx	Change the -ix, -ex, or -yx to ices
-ma	Change the -ma to -mata
-on	Change the -on to -a
-um	Change the -um to -a
-us	Change the -us to -i
