Math Flash Cards: Multiply by 8 (8 is the 2nd Factor)

These math flash cards feature multiplying by 8. If you have mastered multiplying by 4, it may help you when learning to multiply by eight. If you have been learning multiplication tables in order, the good news is that you have already learned how to multiply numbers one through seven by eight.

Tips for Multiplying by
  • One way to multiply by 8 is to add the other number to itself eight times. For example, when multiplying 3 by 8, imagine having eight 3s or 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 24. Here's another example: when multiplying 7 by 8, imagine having eight 7s or 7 + 7 + 7 + 7 + 7 + 7 + 7 + 7 = 56.
  • It may be easier to skip count by 8s when multiplying by 8. Skip count by 8s the number of times that is equal to the number you are multiplying by 8. For example, when multiplying 4 by 8, count by 8s four times...8 - 16 - 24 - 32 to get an answer of 32 or when multiplying 2 by 8, count by 8s two times...8 - 16 for an answer of 16.
  • If you are having a hard time multiplying by 8, you might try multiplying the other number by 4 and then doubling that answer. For example, when multiplying 9 by 8, first multiply 9 X 4 = 32 and then double that answer to get 64. Here's another example of that technique: to multiply 12 by 8, first multiply 12 X 4 = 48 and then double that answer to get 96.
