What is the Slope? Practice Test for Finding M in a Linear Equation

Lines and linear equations have a slope, denoted by m in the equation y=mx+b. Mashup Math's video detailing slope is a great introduction or review before diving into my practice test. This resource is in adaptive mode, which means that the correct answers follow each question.

Directions
  1. Click on the first slide below to enlarge.
  2. Write your answer on a sheet of paper.
  3. Click on the slide or on the next thumbnail at the bottom of the screen.
  4. Check your answers.

Thank you for visiting Student Survive 2 Thrive! I have loads of resources that can be found on my site map, via the topics, or by typing a topic in my search bar. Below are a few related items from my blog:

(5,7) (0,5) What is the slope?

m=the change in y over the change in x (7-5)/(5-0)=2/5. The slope (m) is 2/5.

(6,1) (2,4) What is the slope?

m=the change in y over the change in x (4-1)/(2-6)=-3/4. The slope (m) is -3/4.

(2,1) (3,1) What is the slope?

m=the change in y over the change in x. (1-1)/(3-2)=0/1=0. The slope (m) is 0.

What is the slope? x values: 1, 2, 3, 4 y values: 2, 3, 4, 5

m=the change in y over the change in x. (3-2)/(2-1)=1/1=1. The slope (m) is 1/1=1.

What is the slope? x values: 2, 4, 6, 8 y values: 8, 7, 6, 5

m=the change in y over the change in x (8-7)/(2/4)=-1/2. The slope (m) is 1/-2=-1/2.

What is the slope? x values are 10, 15, 20, 25 y values are 3, 3, 3, 3

m= the change in y over the change in x (3-3)/(10-15)=0/-5=0. The slope (m) is 0.

What is the slope? x values are 1, 3, 5, 7 and y values are 4, 5, 6, 7.

m=the change in y over the change in x (4-5)/(1-3)=-1/-2=1/2. The slope (m) is 1/2.

What is the slope? x values: 0, 3, 6, 9 and y values: 10, 8, 6, 4

m=the change in y over the change in x (10-8)/(3-0)=2/-3=-2/3. The slope (m) is -2/3.

What is the slope? x values: 4, 4, 4, 4 y values: 6, 4, 2, 0

m=the change in y over the change in x. (6-4)/(4-4)=2/0 which is undefined. The slope (m) is undefined. (This is a vertical line.)

What is the slope? Graph has a line going in an upward direction going up 1 and over 1.

The slope is 1 (go up 1 and over 1 on the graph = 1/1)

What is the slope? Graph has a line going in a downward direction 2 and to the right 1.

The slope (m) is -2. (Go down 2 and right 1.)

What is the slope? Graph shows a horizontal line at x=4.
